Monday to Thursday of week one begins with a house build for a family, desperately needing reliable shelter. You will be physically building the house, with support from the builders and volunteer support team. You are picked up at 7am every morning and you will be on the job site until about 12pm.
On Friday your hard work is rewarded when you join the family for the house blessing ceremony – an important ceremony that takes place before any house is occupied. Food cooked by the villagers is shared with volunteers.
Afterwards you visit Wat Atvea, where you have the chance to take part in a Cambodian cultural experience and receive a blessing from a monk, followed by a water blessing.
The weekend prior to, or following, your volunteer work is devoted to exploring Siem Reap’s famous tourism sites. Be awed wandering around World Heritage-listed temples, including Angkor Wat; See first-hand the great Tonle Sap Lake and floating village and marvel at the dexterity and beauty of traditional Apsara dancers.
About Volunteer Building Cambodia
Smart Tour Travel owner Sinn Meang founded Volunteer Building Cambodia in 2014, determined to help improve living conditions for rural Cambodians living in poverty. The community-driven NGO provides housing, wells, water pumps and toilets to villages where few other NGOs are located. About 85 per cent of rural Cambodians do not have access to adequate sanitation and many cannot afford to access safe water.
VBC is a small NGO with big ideas. It employs a skeleton staff of workers and is dedicated to being open and accountable and providing opportunities to help Cambodians struggling in poverty. For more information visit Volunteer Building Cambodia.
Smart Tour Travel donates 20 per cent of profits to VBC.
